Until the Last Petal Falls
This series is inspired by the concept of time and its relation to aging, family, love, and identity. Through the exploration of my own family, I have come to see time as less of a barrier and more as a unifying passage that frames our collective experiences, our growth, and our legacies. This project began as a coping mechanism to counter the dread I feel as my parents slowly age, but it has turned into a celebration of time and the way in which it connects people. Over the past few months I have looked at, learned about, and photographed family antiques, old photographs, journals, letters, ordinary possessions, and indications of wear. These manifestations of time amplify the connections time enables by providing a tangible experience that elicits a window into another person’s experiences or even another time period. I was able to read the very love letters that started my parent’s relationship, read my mother’s journal from when she was my age, hold possessions that belonged to my grandmother when she was alive, and see photographs of relatives that I was never able to meet. This experience has allowed me to unlock inner connections that I had not yet realized. Time may separate generations and may slowly wither away our loved ones, yet, the continual journey it provides us with connects all of us and our very existences.
